Can you install gutter guards yourself?

You can install DIY snap-in screens yourself, but they tend to clog on top, sag, or blow off, and working on a ladder at roof height carries real fall risk. Professional-grade guards are fitted to clean, re-secured gutters and matched to your trees, which is why they outperform store-bought kits.

Hardware-store guards are cheap and easy to clip on, but they're a different product than what a contractor installs. DIY screens often trap debris on the surface, lift in wind, and don't account for gutter pitch or downspout flow. There's also the safety issue: most gutter work happens at second-story height. A professional install starts by cleaning and re-securing the existing gutters, checking the pitch, and selecting a guard sized to your debris type — micro-mesh for pine needles, for example. That prep is what makes the difference between a guard that lasts and one you're pulling debris off every season.
