European Box Gutters

European box gutters present a compact squared channel at the roof edge. The front is a short vertical lip, not an ogee curve and not a tall flat wall. The floor is level, the rear flange meets the board behind it, and the outline stays minimal. From the yard the eave looks orderly and contemporary: a thin line under the shingles with almost no ornamental detail.
Anatomy of the squared channel
The cut-out shows a brief front face, a level bottom, and a rear flange. The pocket reads as a shallow squared recess beneath the short lip. The lip stays low so the outline remains quiet. There is no crown-molding step on the outside, which is why this shape sits apart from K-style on the chart. Straight sides throw hard shadows rather than a soft highlight. On white or almond the trough can nearly vanish against pale trim. On black, charcoal gray, or dark bronze it draws a crisp border under the roof.
Rooflines that favor a minimal edge
European box suits contemporary, mid-century, and spare exteriors where trim is thin and ornament is limited. It also works on renovated ranches and new builds that use flat fascia and simple drip edges. When the architecture already avoids heavy cornices, a short-lip rectangle keeps the eave consistent with that restraint. Multi-level roofs with clean horizontal bands and garage volumes with short eaves are common places for this silhouette.
Contrasts with K-style, half round, and box
Versus K-style. K-style gutters share similar 5" and 6" chart sizes, but they add a decorative front similar to crown molding. European box keeps the squared pocket and drops the molded face.
Versus half round. Half round gutters are a semicircle. European box has corners. One looks like a cut tube; the other looks like a shallow duct under the roof.
Versus box. Box gutters on the chart are 7" only and show a deeper pocket with a taller flat front. European box is the smaller squared option (5" and 6") with a short lip rather than that taller face.
