A semicircle along the eave
Half round gutters are shaped like a tube sliced down the middle. The open top faces the roof edge; the curved bottom forms the open trough under the eave. From the sidewalk the trough looks like a continuous half cylinder hanging just below the shingles, with a narrow back flange tucked to the fascia. There is no ogee molding on the front: the visible edge is the rim of the curve. That rounded outline is why half round often appears on older or historically inspired houses.
Reading the profile from the street
Stand across the street and the gutter reads as a single arc under the drip edge. Corners show a rounded turn rather than a sharp mitered box. Against clapboard, brick, or stone, the curve sits as a quiet underline; it does not mimic crown molding the way a K-style front does. The cut-out on this page shows the semicircular trough and the short back flange that meets the wall: bowl in front, flange behind, open top facing the drip edge. Daylight along the arc leaves a highlight that follows the curve.
Where this shape commonly belongs
Half round is a natural match for Victorian, Craftsman, farmhouse, and cottage exteriors that already use curved or simple trim. It also suits barns converted to homes, carriage houses, and additions where the owner wants the eave hardware to stay visually light. Extended continuous eaves show the cylinder clearly. Homes with exposed rafter tails or a narrow fascia sometimes pair well with a round trough because the gutter does not add a deep vertical face. Circular porch columns or arched openings can echo the same curves.
Side-by-side with the other chart types
- K-style uses a flat floor and a decorative front similar to crown molding. Half round replaces that molding look with a continuous curve.
- European box is a rectangular channel with a short front lip. Half round has no flat front wall; the front is the arc itself.
- Box gutters on the chart are a deep 7" rectangle. Half round is listed only in 6" and keeps the semicircle.
Chart size and the ten colors
The seamless gutter options chart lists half round gutters in a single size: 6". That size is available in every color on the chart: white, almond, sandstone, clay, brown, dark bronze, black, charcoal gray, musket gray, copper. No other half round widths appear on the chart.
Questions that help you decide
Do you want the eave to read as a soft cylinder or as trim molding? Does the house lean historic or farmhouse more than stock suburban? Walk the curb view first, then match the silhouette you like to the chart. For a free estimate, call (833) 487-0469.
