Named after William Jenkins, a Welsh pioneer settler, Jenkintown is strategically situated along the Route 611 corridor, between Abington and Cheltenham Townships. Incorporated on December 8, 1874, the borough today covers approximately 0.58 square miles and is home to about 4,500 residents.
From its early settlement days around 1697 to elements of the British army passing through en route to the Battle of White Marsh in 1777, Jenkintown has been a witness to significant historical events. Landmarks like the Jenkins' Town Lyceum Building and the Jenkintown-Wyncote station are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, adding to the borough's historical richness.
Jenkintown boasts a volunteer fire department founded over 125 years ago. The department, consisting of Pioneer Fire Company #1 and Independent Fire Company #2, is a testament to the community spirit that defines this borough. Divided into East and West by the business district that surrounds Old York Road, Jenkintown offers diverse living options. The majority of the residential area lies to the west of Old York Road, presenting a traditional small-town mix of homes, duplexes, and row homes. When it comes to education, Jenkintown School District includes Jenkintown Elementary School and Jenkintown Middle/High School.
