Originally known as "Black Creek," the town underwent a name transformation in 1848. The renaming of the town, from Black Creek to Weatherly, was linked to a clock-maker named David Weatherly, who was also an executive of the Beaver Meadow Railroad. An agreement was forged between David Weatherly and the town: he would build them a clock if they adopted the name "Weatherly." However, a tragic twist occurred as David Weatherly, while seeking treatment for cancer in Philadelphia, passed away before the clock could be constructed.
The funding for the promised clock came from Charles and Eurana Schwab. Although the clock was erected on top of the town's school, the name "Weatherly" remained. Throughout the early 20th century, Weatherly witnessed the rise of various industries, including silk mills, foundries, a candy factory, fabricating plants, and a cigar factory. In 1900, the town was home to 2,471 residents, and by 1910, the population had grown to 2,501.
Weatherly, situated at an elevation of 1,100 feet above sea level, is nestled within the Ridge-and-Valley Province of the Appalachian Mountains. The borough is embraced by the natural beauty of the region, with Spring Mountain and Round Head Mountain to the north and Broad Mountain to the south.
