Pottsville's location is just as interesting as its history. Situated 47.4 miles west of Allentown, 96.6 miles northwest of Philadelphia, and 135 miles west of New York City, it serves as a vital hub in Pennsylvania's dynamic landscape.
The story of Pottsville dates back to the 18th century, when King Charles II granted the land that would eventually become Pottsville to William Penn. This grant originally encompassed the land west and south of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. In its early years, Pottsville was a part of Lancaster County, as outlined by an act of the legislative Council in 1729. However, Pottsville would later find its home within the limits of Berks County in 1752.
Pottsville's unique relationship with anthracite coal began in 1790, following the discovery of a coal seam by hunter Necho Allen. Legend has it that Allen's campfire ignited a coal outcropping when he fell asleep at the base of the Broad Mountain. By 1795, the area saw the establishment of an anthracite-fired finery forge along the Schuylkill River.
In 1806, John Pott, the city's namesake, purchased the forge and set the stage for Pottsville's future. The establishment of Schuylkill County in 1811 officially marked Pottsville's position within its boundaries. The city's formal layout occurred in 1816, thanks to local surveyor Henry Donnell. It was in 1819 that Pottsville was designated as a village in Norwegian Township, eventually receiving its incorporation as a borough on February 19, 1828.
Pottsville also boasts being the home of the oldest brewery in the United States, D.G. Yuengling & Son, established in 1829. In 1851, Pottsville was named the county seat of Schuylkill County, replacing Orwigsburg.
As Pottsville grew, the textile industry became a part of its identity, with companies like Phillips Van Heusen starting here in 1881. Sewing shirts by hand and selling them from pushcarts, this venture developed into a substantial business. The Tilt Silk Mill on Twelfth Street, a silk production facility, was another integral part of Pottsville's textile history. It ultimately yielded to the rise of nylon stockings and foreign competition in the late 20th century.
