A historic landmark in Tannersville's landscape was Learned's Tavern, later known as The 1740 Alpine Inn. Unfortunately, the inn met its end in a fire in 2000. However, it left behind a storied past, dating back to its establishment along the Lackawanna Trail. This landmark was the last building on the frontier in 1779. On June 18, 1779, General John Sullivan and his soldiers made camp here before blazing a trail through the wilderness, now famously recognized as Sullivan's Trail.
