Richard Puryear, a Black railroad worker accused of the murder of a white storekeeper, was lynched by a predominantly white mob after escaping from prison. Despite a grand jury investigation, no one was charged or convicted in connection with Puryear's death.
The borough's historical significance is evident through its many landmarks, including the Academy Hill Historic District, Kitson Woolen Mill, Monroe County Courthouse, and Stroud Mansion, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Stroudsburg occupies a central spot at 40°59′9″N 75°11′43″W (40.985764, -75.195352). Covering an area of 1.8 square miles, with 1.8 square miles of land and 0.04 square mile of water, Stroudsburg boasts a prime location that's 38 miles north of Allentown and 53 miles southeast of Scranton. The borough's elevation rests at 500 feet above sea level.
