The story of Clayton is one of growth and community. Jacob Fisler, post the American Revolutionary War, acquired a vast expanse of 6,500 acres of land that would eventually become Clayton. Fislertown, a settlement that emerged from this acquisition, was home to 36 families by 1812. The establishment of a glass factory in the 1850s, by one of Fisler's descendants, played a significant role in the growth of Fislertown.
Clayton's journey continued with its formation as Clayton Township on February 5, 1858, carved out of portions of Franklin Township. Over time, the township evolved, leading to the creation of Clayton Borough on May 9, 1887, from sections of Clayton Township. Eventually, the remaining parts of Clayton Township were absorbed by the borough on April 14, 1908, leading to the dissolution of the township. Today, Clayton proudly stands as a vibrant part of the South Jersey region.
Clayton is known for its scenic landscapes, with a total area of 7.26 square miles. This includes 7.08 square miles of picturesque land and 0.18 square miles of tranquil water. The borough's proximity to natural beauty makes it a sought-after destination.
As of the 2020 United States census, Clayton's population stands at 8,807 residents, marking a 7.7% increase from the 2010 census count. This growth is a testament to the borough's appeal and the welcoming spirit of its community.

The 2010 census revealed a rich tapestry of residents, with 74.83% White, 18.01% Black or African American, 1.80% Asian, and 5.95% Hispanic or Latino of any race.
