The soffit is the underside of the roof overhang, between the fascia and the exterior wall. It often contains vents that allow air into the attic, and it's vulnerable to water damage from failing gutters.
Soffits close in the gap under the eaves and usually carry intake vents that feed the attic ventilation system. Because they sit just inside the gutter line, soffits are quick to show damage when gutters overflow or downspouts back up — you'll see staining, sagging panels, or peeling paint, and blocked soffit vents can drive attic moisture and ice dams. Healthy gutters keep water moving away from the eaves and protect both the soffit and the ventilation it provides.
