A drip edge is a metal flashing installed along the roof's edges that directs runoff into the gutter and away from the fascia, preventing water from wicking back under the shingles.
The drip edge is a small but important piece of flashing that channels water off the roof and cleanly into the gutter rather than letting it cling to and run behind the fascia. It also helps keep wind-driven rain from getting under the first course of shingles. When gutters or drip edge are missing or misaligned, water can rot the fascia and seep into the roof deck. Proper gutter installation accounts for the drip edge so the whole edge of the roof sheds water the way it should.
